Serena Williams Covers New York Magazine

New York magazine is featuring my favorite athlete of all time, Ms. Serena Williams. It’s great to see Serena gracing another fashion magazine cover (did you catch her on the April 2015 cover of Vogue), especially since her figure fuels so many debates about society’s standard of beauty.  The article highlights the Williams sisters dominance in tennis, Serena’s shot at making history at the upcoming US Open, life after tennis and her first real love.  Serena was photographed by Norman Jean Ray and the photos will make you want to get off the couch and do 1,000 crunches.

“I don’t think about it,” she says. “I don’t dwell in the past. If I do, I’ll be swallowed up by negativity. As Mandela once said, ‘I will be in a mental prison.’ ”  When asked what it is like to bear the weight of representing people of color, women, 33-year-olds who want to believe in the imagined possibility of their athletic dominance.
